Zarakes
Zarakes, locally known as 'Zarka' is a friendly, traditional Greek farming village, where working donkeys are still a familiar sight. This sprawling village is built along the ridge of one of the smaller mountains in Southern Evia, just off the main road from Styra to Aliveri. Situated in the narrowest part of the island there are magnificent views over both the Aegean sea and the Gulf of Evia with numerous beautiful beaches to choose from, including the local Zarakon beach.
Zarakes has a local cheesemaker, 2 butchers, 2 tavernas, a pizzeria, 2 bars, 2 mini-markets and general store, a petrol station, bakers and fishmonger's van twice a day. There's also a free doctors clinic twice a week and a small primary school. This area is wonderful for walks and watching the local wildlife, including polecats, golden oriels, tortoise and terrapins.
The area is one of stunning scenery, especially around the old village set in a beautiful green valley on the way to Zarakon beach. Old stone houses are being slowly restored and an holistic centre, The Zarka Centre has recently opened.
The village is open, working and easily accessible throughout the year, with a twice daily bus connection to Athens and ferry crossings from nearby Styra and Eretria to the mainland.
