Marmari

Marmari is the main ferry port for the southernmost region of Evia, with regular ferries from Rafina on the mainland, which is only 30 minute?s drive from Athens International airport. Marmari is named after the vari-coloured marble, found throughout the area, which has been famous since antiquity, especially during the time of the Roman empire, when it was used to build and decorate public and private buildings in Rome itself.

During the last 50 years Marmari has developed into an attractive tourist resort with many amenities, including seafront cafes, excellent fish tavernas, modern hotels. Wonderful sandy beaches include Megali Ammos and Paralia Fygia which are in the Gulf of Evia and have views over to the nine picturesque Petalli islands.

The town is surrounded by mountains, where many Athenians and a few international buyers have built upmarket homes and further inland there are pretty, traditional villages. Many interesting drives can be taken to the Aegean coast, with its wilder bays and beaches, not forgetting the famous Dimosari Gorge, with its spectacular ravines and waterfalls, a favourite with hikers and walkers from all over the world.
