Location
Arghiro
According to local folklore the name Arghiro comes from the old Greek word for silver and refers to the colour of the stubble in the fields, after the harvest. This small, unspoilt, mountain village is situated in a sheltered plateau above the picturesque seaside communities of Aghios Dimitrios and Porto Boufalo, both on the Gulf of Evia. The village was practically abandoned in the years after World War II and the Greek Civil War. Now Greeks from Australia and Athens plus one or two foreigners are restoring and renovating the old stone houses, along with the narrow lanes and the village square, with its church café/taverna and minimarket.
The village also has a primary school, a dairy and a second café. A daily bus service goes to the bustling market town of Aliveri, with numerous connections to Athens. Within a 45 minute drive there are more than a dozen delightful beaches, traditional Greek villages with tavernas and the busier resorts and ferry ports of Nea Styra and Eretria, with frequent crossings to the mainland.
