Kimi

Kimi, the administrative centre of the East Evian Municipality, is a well known and historically significant town. With Mount Dirfis as a backdrop, Kimi stands on a high ridge, with the main road descending from the town, through hairpin bends, to the port of 'Paralia Kimis' (Kimi's seashore) on the Aegean. First established during the Mycenian period, the current picturesque town, with its winding streets was founded in the 1700?s and there are many handsome, stone 18th and 19th century houses with tiled roofs, elaborate wrought iron balconies and ornamental walls and doors. There is an excellent folklore museum and several sophisticated cafes, which are popular meeting places for the young professional of the area.

One of the valleys below Kymi is the source of 'Kimi' spring water which is sold throughout Greece and the area is famous for figs, once described by Elizabeth David as being 'the best in the world'. Kymi port is the only port on the East coast with a ferry service and it is one of the few places where boats can be moored, due to the sheer cliffs and un-navigable rocks along the dramatic coastline. Ferries sail daily to Skyros (which belongs to Kimi administratively) and to the northern Sporades during the summer. The small harbour area has a relaxed atmosphere, with ouzerias, tavernas and cafes along the sea wall. There are beaches either side of the port and the main beach leads onto Platana, Stomio and then down to Mouteri, for the special experience that is swimming in the Aegean Sea.
