Avlonari
Old Avlonari is one of the most picturesque small towns on Evia. It sits on the slopes of a pretty little hill, which is dominated by one of the most beautiful and well-preserved Frankish towers on Evia and the elegant church of Aghios Nikolaos. The newer town is built near the river on the plain and has all the amenities expected, as it serves all the local villages in the mountains up to Seta and further north to Kymi (the local administrative centre). Just 15 minutes drive from the Aegean sea, there are 3 superb sandy beaches; two at Kalamos, where the main beach is edged with tavernas and cafes and one at Korasitha, with its long stretch of pristine sand and crashing waves.
Avlonari is famous for its annual street Bazaar which celebrates the end of the grape harvest and runs for eight days from the 6th of October. Visitors from far and wide come to shop, for a vast range of goods, from goat bells to curtains and local mountain honey to strings of sausages. The main street is full of spits roasting whole pigs and stalls selling delicious honey doughnuts. It really is an experience not to be missed. The long distance bus service from Kymi to Athens runs seven time a day.
