Directions
From the UK
You need to fly to Athens airport and there are daily, direct services from London Luton, Heathrow & Gatwick (EasyJet, Olympic, Go and BA). There are a few direct flights from Manchester (Olympic). Flights from other major airports may involve a transfer – so check carefully before you book.
From Athens airport to Southern Evia
Because Evia is linked to the mainland via a road bridge the island is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. There are also 3 good ferry crossings:
(Important: check ferry crossings before you set off – the times vary throughout the year but timetables are available on-line).
1) Rafina – Marmari
This involves the shortest drive from the airport and the longest ferry crossing (good if you need to get a taxi from the airport & have someone to meet you on Evia).
Directions from the airport: As you leave the airport/car hire area follow signs to Athens, across the flyover and onto the motorway. After 2km take the exit signposted Elefsina. There’s a motorway toll (2.70 euros). Exactly 8km after the toll, take the exit for Marathonas avenue. This will bring you to a crossroads – turn right. Continue for approximately 10km until you come to Rafina. Turn right & follow signs for the ferry.
Drive time Airport – Rafina 15 mins
Ferry crossing – 1 hour 35 mins
2) Aghia Marina to Nea Styra
This is the most popular crossing and is the most convenient for many of the properties on the website.
Follow the directions above, but instead of turning right in Rafina, stay on Marathonos Avenue. You’ll go through many villages and need to look out for Vranas. As you head out of town, past some brown tourist signs (for various archaeological sites) look for a right turn to Schinias (there’s a blue & yellow supermarket on the corner before the bend).
Follow that road for quite a while. When you get to Kato Souli, a village with a 90’ left hand bend (& a ‘ferry boat’ sign), stay on that road, but check your trip switch. Exactly 3km from the village, you’ll see a taverna on the left hand side – turn right opposite the taverna and follow the road down to the sea.
Drive time Airport – Aghia Marina 1 hour
Ferry crossing - 35 mins
There is an additional ferry service from Aghia Marina to Almiropotamos, which runs at weekends during the summer months.
3) Oropos to Eretria
This is a great crossing – it runs until 11.30pm during the summer and although you need to drive further up the mainland it doesn’t take any longer than driving to Aghia Marina, because there’s more motorway driving.
When you leave the airport, follow Athens, then follow the signs to Elefsina (toll 2.70 euros). Stay on this motorway, past the turn off for Marathonas. Continue until you see an exit for Pireaus and Lamia and turn off here, following the signs to Lamia. Stay on this motorway (toll 2.00 euros) until you see signs for Oropos and ferryboat. Follow the road down towards the sea and look out for a sharp left turn (signposted ferryboat). This will take you to the sea front. Turn left & look for the ticket office on your right hand side.
Drive time Airport – Oropos 1 hour
Ferry crossing – 25 mins
Buying a ferry ticket
Ferry prices are based on the number of people (ena = 1, dheo = 2, treea = 3, tesera = 4 and penday = 5. Sign language works too!) and on the size/model of the vehicle (again, pointing works well!)
Taxis
If you choose not to hire a car, we can give you the telephone number of a friendly English speaking taxi driver who will transport you from the airport to the ferry. The alternative is to jump in any cab at the airport (there’s always plenty) – but there’s a good chance the driver won’t know the way. may overcharge you and may take you to the wrong place (eg there are several Aghia Marinas). Our driver isn’t the cheapest (70 euros from the airport to Nea Styra) – but he’s a very safe driver and he’ll look after you! Once you’re on the island, taxis can be booked by the hour or the day, for viewings and sightseeing.
Road Bridge
A really useful option if you arrive on a late flight, or if the ferries aren’t running.
To drive to Evia, follow the directions in 3 – but instead of turning off at Oropos, stay on the motorway towards Lamia and look for signs to Chalkidha immediately after the 3rd toll (2 euros). If you exit here and stay on that road, it eventually leads onto the road bridge and the island of Evia (Halkida is the capital of Evia). When you arrive on the island, stay on the same road. You’ll come to a T-junction – turn right & continue on that road with the sea on your right hand side. Stay on this road through several towns & villages including Eretria, Amarynthos (good place to stop for food!) and eventually Aliveri. In Aliveri turn right at the T-junction to keep heading to Karystos/southern Evia. A few miles after Aliveri there’s a small village called Lepoura – turn right at the signpost & this will bring you down towards the villages of Koskina, Krieza, Zarakes, Almiropotomus, Styra etc.
We’ll send you final directions to your accommodation, with details of how & where to meet our local representative once you’ve booked your trip & know which properties you’re interested in.
